Almost half of businesses (46%) and a quarter of charities (26%) report having cyber security breaches or attacks in the last 12 months, causing significant disruption.

• Fines, compensation and legal costs.

The cost to these businesses can extend into £millions.

About the Speaker: Tony is a Principal Lecturer and Consultant at the University of Wolverhampton. He has thirty-five years’ experience in the IT and Cyber Security, and is responsible for the development of Cyber Security best practice in the Midlands region and nationally in the U.K.

Tony is closely engaged with the Cyber Security community and has delivered a number of innovative projects at the University of Wolverhampton in collaboration with other Universities.

 

2. Cyber Threat Intelligence for Businesses

Dr Haider al-Khateeb, PhD BSc(Hons) PgCAP SFHEA CEH

Disruptive technologies introduce business opportunities but inevitably continue to proliferate the threat landscape in our fragile cyber ecosystem. Recent headlines include “home working increases cyber-security fears”; “hackers threaten to leak plastic surgery pictures”; and a hacking campaign compromising the infrastructure of SolarWinds, as a result, UK security analysts are trying to determine the impact of this hacking campaign on the UK. This presentation aims to strategically discuss trending cybersecurity threats and the current state-of-the-art approaches to boost businesses readiness through Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI).

About the Speaker:

Dr Haider al-Khateeb holds a position as a Reader in Cybersecurity and Deputy Director of the Wolverhampton Cyber Research Institute (WCRI) at the University of Wolverhampton. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and holds a PhD in Cybersecurity. Haider is a project lead for R&D and Knowledge Transfer activities with over 12 years of experience in the UK’s higher education sector. He and is actively engaged with the latest trends on Distributed Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR), Cyber Resilience, Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI), and Online Safety for vulnerable groups.

3. Machine Learning for Proactive Security-by-Design in Smart Cities

Gabriela Ahmadi-Assalemi, PhD Researcher, FHEA, MSc, ITIL Practitioner

The Internet of Things (IoT) fuses devices and sensors using communication networks creating business opportunities for automation. The application of innovative technologies creates fragile cyber-physical-natural ecosystems. Inevitably, the threat landscape evolves, and cyber actors persistently strengthen their attack methods, vectors and targets. Headlines including “hackers boost toxic chemical level 100-fold at water plant” or “attack is a ‘blueprint’ for disruptive hacking operations” are concerning for our fragile ecosystems. This presentation aims to strategically discuss the current state-of-the-art approaches to enable businesses to future proof for cyber resilience, adopt proactive security-by-design posture against evolving attacks leveraging Machine Learning. About the Speaker:

Gabriela Ahmadi-Assalemi holds a position of Deputy CISO with the University of Cambridge, she is also a PhD Researcher with the Wolverhampton Cyber Research Institute (WCRI) at the University of Wolverhampton and. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and holds an MSc in Cybersecurity. Gabriela leads and advises on information and cybersecurity including policy, governance, compliance, training, incident response management in HE, for a Covid-19 Testing Centre and asymptomatic testing enabled by 20 years in IT Technical Leadership roles. Gabriela’s research interests focus on attribution and anomalous behaviour detection in cyber-physical systems (CPS) leveraging machine learning as part of security-by-design.
